Data Recovery: Get Your Files Back

August 29th, 2007 By: abi

When your disks, tapes, CDs, DVDs, floppies and other media became incomplete or entirely inaccessible, you can always opt for a data recovery service to rescue your important files.  I just realized this when I watched a Prison Break episode.  Alright, I may still be in the Stone Age but really, I used to think that when you delete a file or the disk has been damaged, it’s forever lost.

Apparently, when you delete a file, you are only deleting an index entry leading to the precise location of the file but the data is still there.  In most cases, a large fraction of this data can still be recovered by using specific data recovery hardware or software.  Problem becomes unsolvable only when the file is overwritten because of your succeeding usage.  Hence, the moment you realize you’ve deleted an important file, consider an expert’s advice and don’t rely on your limited data recovery knowledge as amateurs can ruin all attempts to recover files.

How is it done? To put it briefly, data recovery is facilitated in optical drives by fixing scratches and filling the nicks on your CD or DVD.  Local computer shops usually have this repair product for consumers.  Hard disks, on the other hand, can be fixed by replacing the PCB or Printer Circuit Board, provided that the so-called platters that keep the stored data are secured.  A Hex Editor can also come in handy if the data has been written over or completely erased.  You can also try this tool when the file index is damaged.  Just keep in mind that the best person capable of doing this is a data recovery specialist.
