Web Hosting, the Virtual Dedicated Server Style

September 4th, 2007 By: abi

Dedicated server hosting is a winner when it comes to hosting security and stability. You have an entire control on your server, enabling you to select your own operating system, hardware, software and other specifications - pertinent decisions you can’t make with a shared hosting service. However, dedicated server hosting is quite costly and definitely not an option if you are on a limited budget. You will most likely end up with a shared hosting package wherein you share the same directory with other users. With this, the possibility of getting your files affected or accessed by another user is inevitable.

To balance the advantages and disadvantages of a dedicated server hosting and a shared server hosting, the VDS or virtual dedicated server is created. VDS is a remarkable hosting technology that makes it possible to have your own web server for a considerably lower price.

In a VDS technology, a computer is split up in several unique servers that have its own domain name, disk space, bandwidth etc.  It functions much like that of a dedicated server. No single account can take up a better proportion of a server’s bandwidth, disk space and RAM even if you share the same physical server.  One user cannot view or edit your data, eliminating the possibility of getting your files affected. Significantly, a crashed application in another VDS can’t cause harm to your own VDS because it has its own installed software, operating system, web server and other particulars.

With all these benefits and more, VDS hosting seems to be today’s most promising server hosting.
