Are Your Posts Too Long or Too Short?

Most writers forget about word count the moment they’re too absorbed with their piece. If you’re writing a novel, you can let your editor worry about that. But in the blog world, you often have yourself as your own editor. This can be frustrating sometimes because you don’t know when to stop and when to write more.

Unfortunately, no specific number of words can be affixed to a blog post. You can only rely on some guidelines and your own instinct. Probably the first thing you should remember is the short attention span typical to web readers. The ease of a mouse click has turned many readers into scanners so make sure you get your main point stated in less words. If your material is engaging enough, I don’t see a reason why your readers won’t finish your article or go back to your site whenever they feel like reading again.

Depending on your subject too, you can write shorter or longer. A light, interesting story can take up more space and accommodate more adjectives but a serious topic definitely needs some straight to the point discussion. The heavier the subject is, the more you should write it concisely. That’s not to say you have to keep it short but just keep it short as possible without sacrificing the significance of the content. This works the same for writing reviews.

If you are concerned about SEO and RSS, it is recommended that you write a lot of articles of less than a thousand words. The technique here is to check whether your topic can still be divided into subtopics. Write about each subtopic. This will enable you to keep your posts short and at the same time, you come up with more articles.
